In Memoriam: Industry Remembers Jim Lawrence

Remembering Jim Lawrence: A Stalwart of the Maritime Industry

On June 1, the maritime industry lost one of its most revered figures, Jim Lawrence, at the age of 70. Known for his leadership and dedication to the industry, Lawrence’s passing was announced by MTI Network, where he served as founder and chairman until his last days.

Jim Lawrence’s career spanned decades, during which he held key positions at prominent organizations such as Lloyd’s List, the Connecticut Maritime Association, Marine Money, and MTI Network. His unwavering support for the maritime industry and his efforts to drive it forward have left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

A Champion for the Maritime Industry

In 1988, Lawrence joined the Connecticut Maritime Association, where he became the face of the annual CMA Conference, bringing together industry leaders from various sectors. His leadership and dedication to mentoring the future generation through initiatives like the education foundation and the Commodore Gala Dinner have been instrumental in shaping the industry’s future.

Additionally, Lawrence co-founded Marine Money in 1988, a renowned organization in ship finance, and played a crucial role in establishing MTI Network in 1990, a crisis communication network for the maritime industry.

A Legacy of Support

Colleagues at MTI Network fondly remember Jim Lawrence as a trusted advisor and a prominent figure in the U.S. maritime industry. His contributions extended beyond his professional endeavors, as he also served on the board of the Seaman’s Church Institute and the OPA 90 Forum, demonstrating his commitment to supporting seafarers and promoting industry standards.

In recognition of his dedication, Lawrence was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard’s Distinguished Public Service Award in 2019, highlighting his significant contributions to the maritime community.
