DNV Signs Contract with COSCO for Methanol-Ethanol Ready Shuttle Tanker

Classification society DNV has recently inked a new agreement with Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry Zhoushan Shipyard (COSCO) for the classification of a state-of-the-art methanol-ethanol ready Suezmax DP2 shuttle tanker. This vessel was ordered by Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT) as part of their fleet expansion efforts and will be operated under charter to Norwegian energy giant Equinor, further solidifying the long-standing partnership between these industry leaders.

The newly contracted shuttle tanker, boasting a hefty 154,000-deadweight-tonne (dwt) capacity, is equipped with dual-fuel capability for methanol-readiness and fully complies with IMO NOx-Tier III and EEDI Phase 3 regulations. Scheduled for delivery in early 2028, this cutting-edge vessel is set to revolutionize the maritime industry with its innovative features.

One of the standout features of this shuttle tanker is its fifth-generation bow loading system developed by McGregor, designed to enhance safety and efficiency during loading operations from offshore production units, even in the most challenging sea conditions. Additionally, the vessel will be shore power ready and equipped with VOC prevention systems to minimize operational emissions, aligning with the industry’s push towards sustainability.

This project marks the sixth vessel in a series of newbuilds commissioned by KNOT at COSCO, bringing the total number of DP2 Suezmax shuttle tankers ordered by KNOT at the yard to an impressive 12 vessels.
