UML ready to welcome first newbuild tanker fitted with WAPS

The Future of Shipping: Union Maritime Introduces Wind-Assisted Propulsion Tanker

The UK-based shipping player Union Maritime (UML) is set to revolutionize the industry with the introduction of its future-proof long-range 2 (LR2) tanker equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion solution (WAPS) developed by compatriot design and engineering firm BAR Technologies.

The LR2 tanker, named Brands Hatch, is the first in a series of fourteen vessels to be equipped with BAR Technologies’ innovative WindWings system. These 37.5-meter WindWings are poised to significantly reduce the vessel’s fuel consumption by approximately 1,200 tonnes annually, leading to a substantial decrease of over 3,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Union Maritime’s commitment to sustainability is further exemplified by the vessel’s ability to achieve the maximum 5% Wind Reward Factor under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, thereby eliminating the need for alternative fuels and ensuring compliance with global sustainability standards through 2030.

The WindWings solution, classified as a zero-GHG energy source, not only enhances the tanker’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) but also supports compliance with the newly approved IMO Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity (GFI) standard, positioning Brands Hatch as a pioneer in eco-friendly shipping.

Laurent Cadji, Managing Director at Union Maritime, expressed excitement about the company’s collaboration with BAR Technologies, stating, “As our first vessel with WindWings, and with many more to follow, this marks the beginning of a new era for Union Maritime and the global shipping industry as we combine our deep maritime expertise with cutting-edge innovation to drive towards a more efficient and sustainable future.”

Project AeroPower: Pioneering Wind Propulsion Systems

Under the initiative Project AeroPower, Union Maritime has partnered with Anglo-Eastern, Synergy, Atlantas Ship Management, and BAR Technologies to introduce innovative wind propulsion systems on a global scale. This collaborative effort aims to obtain the necessary approvals for the commercial adoption of new technologies, fostering sustainability and efficiency in the shipping industry.

Union Maritime’s forward-thinking approach is further demonstrated by its contract with BAR Technologies for the installation of WindWings on a total of 34 newbuild tankers, with Brands Hatch being the first of many vessels to lead the company’s long-term vision for a greener maritime future.

With the successful integration of wind-assisted propulsion technology, Union Maritime is poised to set new standards for sustainability and efficiency in shipping operations, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious industry.
