MODEC Renews R&D Agreement with Terra Drone for FPSO Tank Inspections

MODEC has announced the renewal of its joint research and development (R&D) agreement with Terra Drone for the non-destructive internal inspection of crude oil storage tanks on floating production, storage, and offloading systems (FPSOs) using Terra UT drones.

The renewed agreement follows the success of the initial collaboration between the two companies in 2024, where significant advancements were made in measurement accuracy, safety enhancements, and reduced inspection time.

This partnership aims to further advance the practical application and operational deployment of drone technology for FPSO tank inspections. With periodic structural inspections being essential on FPSOs, the ability to conduct these inspections safely without increasing personnel onboard provides a significant advantage.

By leveraging drone technology, MODEC and Terra Drone are committed to improving occupational safety, reducing manpower requirements, and enhancing operational efficiency in FPSOs and other offshore platforms.

One of the key achievements of the collaboration so far has been the development of the Terra UT drone for inspection operations on FPSOs in offshore Brazil. This drone has successfully reduced inspection time, improved measurement accuracy with enhanced ultrasonic sensors, and increased safety during inspections by incorporating a gas detector.

As part of the renewed agreement, the focus will be on optimizing the airframe structure and design for global deployment, integrating high-resolution cameras for enhanced visual inspection capabilities, and redesigning the airframe for improved maintainability.

These advancements in drone technology for FPSO tank inspections will not only streamline operations but also contribute to a safer working environment for crew members. MODEC and Terra Drone are committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation in the offshore industry.
