Enhanced Oil Spill Detection System Deployed Offshore Brazil

In a collaborative effort between Norwegian ocean insights provider Miros and Brazilian navigation and communication solutions provider Belga Marine, an updated oil spill detection (OSD) monitoring system has been launched for operations offshore Brazil.

The enhanced OSD monitoring system now includes cloud-based monitoring capabilities and has been installed on several production assets offshore Brazil operated by a major Brazilian energy company, according to Miros.

By integrating Miros’ legacy technology with real-time cloud-based data sharing, the system facilitates collaboration among offshore operators, environmental regulators, and onshore stakeholders. This integration aims to enhance environmental compliance and reduce response time in the event of potential oil spills.

CEO’s Statement

Marius Five Aarset, CEO of Miros, expressed his excitement about delivering this groundbreaking solution, emphasizing the importance of digital environmental monitoring in protecting Brazil’s coastline while supporting customers in meeting their environmental obligations.

The new cloud-based solution aligns with national guidelines, ensuring the integrity and security of OSD alarms and monitoring, providing transparency and reliability in environmental operations.

Environmental Compliance

Belga Marine previously announced new guidelines from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to enhance the integrity of OSD alarms and monitoring. The cloud-based add-on aims to address these guidelines by securely sharing real-time data with multiple stakeholders.

By leveraging Miros’ IoT solution, Miros Cloud, the new cloud-based OSD monitoring system aims to strengthen environmental monitoring efforts in Brazil’s offshore energy industry.

Positive Feedback

The introduction of cloud-powered OSD monitoring has received positive feedback from customers, marking a new chapter for environmental monitoring in Brazil’s offshore sector. With over 250 OSD systems deployed globally, Miros plans to continue enhancing its environmental monitoring capabilities.

Alexandre de Carvalho, Head of Business Development at Belga Marine, emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing environmental challenges, highlighting the role of Brazilian companies in ensuring sustainable operations to protect the coastline.

Future Prospects

The deployment of the enhanced oil spill detection system comes at a pivotal time as exploration activities offshore Brazil are set to increase following the recent award of new acreage in the country’s latest oil and gas round.

Nine companies, including Petrobras, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Shell, secured exploration rights to 34 blocks in Brazil’s Foz do Amazonas, Pelotas, and Santos basins, signaling a new phase of exploration and production in the region.
