Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore Calls for Industry Transformation to Achieve Decarbonization Goals

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a French specialist in testing, inspection, and certification, has emphasized the need to rethink how the global fleet is financed, fueled, and operated to achieve its decarbonization goals. Matthieu de Tugny, Executive Vice-President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, has released a new book titled “Toward a Sustainable Blue Economy,” advocating for a radical shift in the maritime industry’s approach to sustainability.

In his latest book, a follow-up to BV’s “Shaping a Better Maritime World” published in 2022, de Tugny acknowledges the progress made in adopting new technologies to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry. However, he points out that the industry’s reliance on fuel oil and traditional practices hinders its transition away from fossil fuels.

The current ocean economy, valued at over $2.2 trillion, supports millions of jobs globally. De Tugny stresses the need to depart from a risk-averse financial system in shipping and advocates for green financing that incentivizes climate performance. He calls for increased collaboration among industry stakeholders to challenge existing operational models and drive sustainable change.

Classification societies like BV play a crucial role in facilitating industry transformation by providing expertise and assurance to support the development of clean technologies. De Tugny emphasizes the importance of combining visionary thinking with practical execution to achieve a sustainable blue economy.

He highlights BV’s commitment to prioritizing seafarer safety and environmental protection through the development of innovative solutions to mitigate the impact of maritime operations. The shift in the role of classification societies from industry assurance to enablers of collaboration is essential in driving fundamental change to protect the oceans and the planet.

De Tugny’s book serves as a roadmap and a rallying cry for the maritime industry to embrace sustainability and adapt to unlock a sustainable future. It emphasizes shipping’s role as a steward of the oceans amid growing environmental challenges, urging the industry to embrace change for a better future.
