AYK Energy Receives DNV Approval for Marine Batteries

AYK Energy is gearing up to increase production of its latest line of marine batteries following the receipt of type approval from DNV. This approval marks a significant milestone for the company and the marine industry as a whole.

DNV has given the green light to AYK Energy’s Pisces, Pisces +, OrionAN, and OrionAN+ batteries, along with the aluminum versions of AYK’s previous modules. These new innovations are set to establish new benchmarks for clean energy marine propulsion.

Chris Kruger, the founder of AYK Energy, expressed his excitement over this approval, emphasizing its potential to make marine battery technology more accessible and drive widespread adoption. This endorsement paves the way for a more sustainable future in maritime transportation.

One of the immediate impacts of this approval is the installation of a 10.4MWh Pisces + battery system on the Aurora Botnia, a hybrid-electric Ropax ferry owned by Wasaline. This ferry operates a daily service between Finland and Sweden, and the integration of AYK Energy’s advanced batteries will enhance its efficiency and environmental performance.

Earlier this year, AYK Energy successfully installed 12 megawatt-hour (MWh) Orion+ batteries on Brittany Ferries’ Guillaume de Normandie and Saint-Malo hybrid-electric ferries at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Weihai. These vessels are now capable of operating on zero-emission battery power during port entries and exits, contributing to improved air quality and reduced emissions in port areas. The ferries are designed to run on LNG, battery power, or a combination of both, showcasing the versatility of AYK Energy’s innovative solutions.
