Kongsberg Maritime to Supply Propellers for Colombian Navy’s New Frigate

Kongsberg Maritime has recently secured a contract with Damen Naval to provide twin Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) and shaftlines for the Colombian Navy’s upcoming frigate project. This collaboration stems from a larger contract between Damen Naval and the Colombian Ministry of Defence to develop a new frigate for the Colombian Navy.

Project Details

The Colombian Navy’s new frigate project, set to commence construction at the end of 2025, is based on Damen’s SIGMA design (Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach). The SIGMA design has gained popularity among various navies, with existing variations in use by countries like Mexico and Indonesia. This modular platform approach allows for customization based on specific operational requirements.

The frigate is part of the Colombian Navy’s Plataforma Stratégica de Superficie (PES) program, aimed at replacing the aging Padilla frigates and enhancing the country’s maritime capabilities. The commissioning of the new frigate is expected by the end of 2029 or the beginning of 2030.

Kongsberg Maritime’s Contribution

Kongsberg Maritime’s role in this project involves providing customized propeller and shaftline systems to ensure optimal performance and reduced underwater radiated noise. This partnership with Damen Naval marks another milestone in their collaboration, following a previous contract for four shipsets of CPP systems for anti-submarine warfare frigates destined for the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian Navy.

The selection of Kongsberg Maritime for these critical propulsion components underscores the company’s expertise in supporting the construction of modern naval vessels with advanced and reliable systems.
