Changes at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is undergoing a leadership transition as Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, the superintendent, has announced her departure following the Class of 2025 commencement ceremony. Joining her in departing is Deputy Superintendent Rear Admiral David M. Wulf.
In the interim, the academy’s chief of staff, Capt. Anthony J. “Tony” Ceraolo (USCG, Ret’d), will step in as acting superintendent while the Department of Transportation conducts a search for a permanent replacement.
A Legacy of Service
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy expressed gratitude for the service of Vice Admiral Nunan and Rear Admiral Wulf, highlighting their dedication to the academy and its mission. Nunan, a career Coast Guard officer, became the 14th superintendent of the academy in December 2022, making history as the first woman to hold the role. Prior to her tenure at USMMA, she played a key role in advancing diversity and inclusion within the Coast Guard, focusing on policy changes to enhance the retention of women in the service. Her leadership and experience, including holding a 1600 Masters / 3rd Mate Unlimited license, have been instrumental in guiding the academy.
A Vision for the Future
During her time at USMMA, Nunan helped secure a 10-year restoration partnership agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a pivotal step in revitalizing the campus infrastructure. Collaborating with the USACE, the academy developed a master plan for future construction projects aimed at modernizing the facilities. The Army Corps is committed to rehabilitating and upgrading the campus infrastructure to support the academy’s mission and ensure a conducive learning environment for its midshipmen.
As the search for a new superintendent commences, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence in education and leadership development under the guidance of acting superintendent Capt. Anthony J. Ceraolo. The dedication and commitment of the departing leaders, Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan and Rear Admiral David M. Wulf, have set a strong foundation for the academy’s future success.
