Wärtsilä Signs Five-Year Lifecycle Agreement with Alpha Gas for LNG Carriers

Technology group Wärtsilä has recently inked a five-year Lifecycle Agreement with Greek LNG management company, Alpha Gas, based in Athens. This agreement encompasses two LNG carriers, each equipped with four Wärtsilä 34DF engines, with a focus on providing Alpha Gas with enhanced operational insight, increased availability, and better predictability of maintenance costs. The order with Wärtsilä was officially recorded in the second quarter of 2025.

Given the current regulatory and economic landscape, shipowners and operators are increasingly seeking assistance in maximizing the efficiency and utilization of their assets. For LNG carriers, which face limited opportunities for unscheduled stops and downtime, ensuring the reliability of their vessels is of paramount importance.

“Our primary objective is to optimize efficiency and reliability across our fleet,” says Peter Lonski, Technical Director at Alpha Gas. “This agreement with Wärtsilä will play a key role in helping us achieve this objective, while also enabling us to accurately forecast our maintenance costs. We anticipate being able to extend the time between overhauls thanks to the dynamic maintenance planning feature.”

The agreement with Wärtsilä will empower Alpha Gas to optimize the operations and maintenance of these LNG carriers more efficiently through round-the-clock expert remote support and guidance for troubleshooting and maintenance utilizing specialized diagnostic tools. This will enable Wärtsilä experts to directly monitor the vessels’ systems, employ advanced diagnostic tools to aid the crew in troubleshooting activities, and swiftly resolve faults. Additionally, the agreement will help minimize operational expenditures and lifecycle costs by facilitating preventive interventions that can potentially circumvent the need for costly repairs and on-site visits.

Henrik Wilhelms, Director of Agreement Sales at Wärtsilä Marine, emphasizes the consultative approach taken with customers in tailoring agreements to their specific needs to enhance their operations. “Every business model is unique, and we are fully dedicated to ensuring that our customers’ assets deliver maximum value throughout their lifecycle. This is especially crucial in light of the industry’s ambitious environmental targets for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Notably, this isn’t the first collaboration between Wärtsilä and Alpha Gas, as a similar agreement was signed in November 2024 covering two additional LNG carriers. The four sister vessels of Alpha Gas now covered by the Wärtsilä Lifecycle Agreement are the Energy Pacific, Energy Endeavour, Energy Integrity, and the Energy Intelligence.
