Norwegian maritime solutions provider Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has recently become a member of the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), a global community of maritime battery enablers, with the aim of promoting clean energy adoption and accelerating electrification within the maritime industry.
By joining the MBF, Wilhelmsen intends to stay ahead of emerging battery technologies, regulatory developments, and deployment strategies while sharing its expertise in retrofitting vessels and establishing charging infrastructure.
โBeing part of the Maritime Battery Forum underscores our dedication to expediting the maritime sector’s shift towards cleaner and more energy-efficient operations. We are excited to collaborate with partners who share our vision, exchange operational insights, contribute to battery technology advancements, and facilitate the implementation of essential onboard and onshore systems like integrated battery solutions and charging stations. Through these collaborative efforts, we aim to make maritime electrification a feasible and practical reality,โ the company stated.
Wilhelmsen is exploring various avenues to support and expand maritime battery utilization in vessel operations, including developing specialized treatments and chemical solutions tailored for battery-powered systems. Furthermore, the company is delving into advanced sensor technologies and data analytics to enhance battery performance monitoring and optimization during operations.
The venture into maritime electrification aligns with Wilhelmsen’s strategic expansion of sustainability initiatives.
In 2023, Wilhelmsen partnered with Yinson GreenTech to assist in the development and trials of Hydromover, Singapore’s inaugural fully electric cargo vessel. Subsequently, in 2024, the company joined the Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA), a collaborative endeavor aimed at hastening the adoption of clean energy in regional maritime logistics.
Earlier this year, at its Pandan Loop facility, WSS inaugurated an electric vessel charging station tailored to support electric vessels like Hydromover 2.0 and Hydroglyder.
Wilhelmsen Port Services also inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Yinson GreenTech and R W Marine Services to coordinate the deployment and integration of electric vessels within Singapore’s port ecosystem.
