Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has announced a significant order from Hitachi, Ltd. for over a dozen REMUS 300 small uncrewed undersea vehicles (SUUVs). This order is part of a multi-year program aimed at delivering these advanced vehicles to Hitachi.

The REMUS 300 platform, developed by HII, is a modular and open-architecture SUUV designed for versatility in various missions. It served as the foundation for the U.S. Navy’s Lionfish program, showcasing its capabilities and reliability.

This procurement demonstrates the strong partnership between HII and Japan, a crucial ally in the Pacific region. The REMUS 300 platform is currently in use by multiple countries globally, offering seamless interoperability with allied forces.

The REMUS UUV family provides numerous advantages in modern naval operations. These autonomous systems can operate independently or alongside crewed platforms, such as Virginia-class nuclear submarines, to enhance mission capabilities, reduce risks, and protect personnel.

Thanks to its open-architecture design, the REMUS platform allows for quick integration of different payloads, enabling tailored configurations for specific missions and facilitating future technology upgrades. This adaptability is key to ensuring operational effectiveness and cost-efficiency over time.

With a track record of over 700 REMUS vehicles sold to more than 30 countries, including 14 NATO members, HII has established itself as a leader in the field. Remarkably, over 90% of REMUS units delivered in the past 23 years are still in active service, highlighting the platform’s durability and long-term value—a crucial factor in defense procurement decisions.
