Germany Invests €400 Million in Climate-Neutral Shipping and Ports
The German government has made a significant decision to support climate-neutral shipping and ports by allocating an additional sum of €400 million. The announcement was made by Patrick Schnieder, the Federal Transport Minister, on July 3, 2025.
“Modern shipping with appropriate infrastructure is the backbone of Germany as a business location. The federal government, the states, and the private sector must now join forces to offset the pressure for transformation. The millions of euros for modernization are an important step in this,” emphasized Schnieder.
The funds will be sourced from the country’s Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) to accelerate the maritime industry’s energy transition. Specifically, the allocated funds will be utilized to implement the National Port Strategy and the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping. Additionally, the funds will support the construction of shore power and bunkering facilities for alternative fuels, as well as the development of climate-neutral shipping corridors.
The initiative also aims to promote the modal shift from public transport and urban commercial traffic to waterways. Details regarding the funding options are currently under development and will be presented later this year, as per the Federal Minister of Transport.
In parallel news, German authorities have started inspecting tankers passing through the country’s waters to verify the validity of their insurance for oil spill damage. This measure is part of a broader set of initiatives led by the European Union to combat the Russian ‘shadow’ fleet and enhance maritime transport security while safeguarding the marine environment.
