Raising the Bar for Carbon Capture and Storage: Draeger Marine & Offshore Supports Landmark CO2 Injection Test

Rotterdam-headquartered Draeger Marine & Offshore (DMO) has played a crucial role in the recent carbon dioxide (CO2) injection test for carbon capture and storage (CCS) offshore UK. The first of its kind in the UK, this test marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat climate change.

Key Players and Achievements

In collaboration with Perenco UK, Carbon Catalyst, and Harbour Energy, the joint venture successfully completed CO2 tests at the Leman natural gas reservoir in the Southern North Sea. The use of Petrodec’s ERDA rig, the first in the UK with an approved safety case for CCS operations, ensured the safe execution of the project.

DMO’s contribution to the project included providing advanced gas detection solutions, such as the Dräger X-zone for extensive area monitoring and the Dräger X-am 5000 for personal gas monitoring. Jesper de Jong, Sales Manager at DMO, highlighted the importance of ensuring a safe environment during the CO2 injection test to protect workers from potential leaks.

Future Prospects

The Poseidon CCS project, with an initial injection capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), aims to increase its ultimate capacity to 40 Mtpa by 2029. Perenco, Carbon Catalyst, and Wintershall Dea have secured licenses and interests in the project, signaling a promising future for CCS initiatives in the UK.

With 15 successful injection cycles and an exceptional dataset acquired during the test phase, the Poseidon project sets a strong foundation for the growth of CCS technology in the region. DMO’s support in ensuring the safety and success of the test underscores the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the marine and offshore industry.
