ABS Grants Approval to Hanwha Ocean for New Semisubmersible Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Design

ABS, a leading provider of classification services to the marine and offshore industries, recently issued approval in principle (AIP) to Hanwha Ocean for its innovative new design of a semisubmersible-type floating offshore wind turbine.

The new design, known as WindHive 15-H3, is specifically engineered to support 15-megawatt (MW) turbines mounted on three hexagonal columns. ABS conducted thorough design reviews in compliance with class and industry standards to ensure the safety and efficiency of the new floating offshore wind structure.

Rob Langford, ABS Vice President of Global Offshore Renewables, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Hanwha Ocean, stating, “Floating offshore wind power is poised to play a pivotal role in the global energy landscape, and we are pleased to work with industry pioneers like Hanwha Ocean to develop cutting-edge solutions that prioritize safety at sea.”

The approval from ABS serves as a testament to the technical robustness and adherence to regulatory requirements of the WindHive 15-H3 design. With the continued advancements in floating offshore wind technology, projects like this are crucial in driving the growth and sustainability of renewable energy sources.

As the demand for clean energy alternatives continues to rise, collaborations between industry leaders and regulatory bodies are essential in pushing the boundaries of innovation and ensuring the safe and reliable operation of offshore wind farms.
