Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Advances Towards Commercializing Offshore Rocket Launch and Recovery Vessel

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken a significant step forward in the commercialization of an offshore rocket launch and recovery vessel through a strategic partnership agreement with Innovative Space Carrier (ISC) and Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay.

The focus of MOL’s foray into space-related business is on the offshore launch and recovery of rockets. With a target for commercialization set around 2030, the first phase of this endeavor involves the development of a recovery vessel, followed by a comprehensive feasibility study for the commercialization of an offshore launch vessel.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to contribute to the advancement of a new space infrastructure that harnesses the potential of the ocean and supports next-generation space transport.

Collaboration for Offshore Rocket Launch and Recovery

For the successful realization of offshore rocket launch and recovery, MOL will collaborate closely with ISC and Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay. The primary objective is to enhance the frequency of rocket launches through innovative solutions.

As part of the development process for the rocket recovery ship, the consortium will define the design requirements for such vessels and conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to assess their compatibility with the ASCA reusable rocket developed by ISC. Subsequent verification tests will be carried out to validate the findings and ensure the effectiveness of the vessel.

Feasibility Study for Offshore Launch Vessels

Following the successful development of the rocket recovery ship, the focus will shift towards a feasibility study for the commercialization of offshore launch vessels for rockets. This phase will involve an in-depth examination of the design requirements for such vessels, along with technical and economic feasibility studies. The applicability of these vessels to the ASCA 1 rocket will be evaluated, and verification tests will be conducted to confirm their viability.
