Yanmar Collaborates on Mass-Production Eel Seedling Tank to Reduce Costs

Revolutionizing Eel Seedling Production: A Joint Effort by Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency, Yanmar Holdings, and Marino-Forum 21

The Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA), Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd., and Marino-Forum 21 have collaborated on a groundbreaking project to develop a new tank for the mass production of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) seedlings.

Under the project titled “Demonstration of Mass-Production System for Commercialization of Eel Seedlings” commissioned by the Fisheries Agency, the team successfully created a tank capable of producing approximately 1,000 glass eels per tank. This achievement marks a significant milestone in reducing rearing costs and streamlining the production process.

The innovative tank is constructed using fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), offering a more cost-effective and scalable solution compared to traditional acrylic or polyvinyl tanks. With further enhancements in tank design, advanced rearing methods, and the development of an automatic feeding system on the horizon, the mass production of artificially produced eel seedlings is poised for widespread adoption.

The research findings from this project have been patented under the title “Tank and Device for Rearing Fish Larvae,” solidifying the team’s contribution to the aquaculture industry.

A research paper detailing the development of this new tank for mass production of eel seedlings has been published in the prestigious journal Fisheries Science, showcasing the scientific rigor and innovation behind this breakthrough.
