RINA Selected for Water Assessment Study in Brazil for Green Hydrogen Production

RINA, an Italy-based engineering consulting, inspection, and certification company, has been chosen to conduct a water assessment study to secure industrial water supply for green hydrogen production at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP) in Brazil.

The World Bank-funded assignment, to be executed by RINA in collaboration with local firm Krypton, will investigate two water sourcing strategies: reusing treated effluent from sewage treatment plants in Fortaleza’s western region and seawater desalination. Both options will be evaluated for technical feasibility, economic viability, environmental impact, and compliance with local infrastructure and regulations.

The study will also include a detailed environmental impact analysis of water demand at the CIPP for the next 5-10 years, considering anticipated industrial growth. It will assess regulatory and infrastructure requirements to ensure alignment with Brazilian standards and existing water systems, as well as explore how the proposed infrastructure could improve water access for nearby communities.

On a related note, Norwegian green hydrogen and ammonia company Fuella has partnered with the Port of Pecém to develop a large-scale green ammonia project in the area. Additionally, the port has selected Stolthaven Terminals, in collaboration with Global Energy Storage (GES), to plan, design, build, and operate a green ammonia terminal in Pecém.
