Fluxys Partners with Sacyr Proyecta for CO2 Emissions Reduction Project

Belgian energy infrastructure company Fluxys has recently announced its collaboration with Madrid-based Sacyr Proyecta to spearhead front-end engineering design (FEED) services for a new CO2 emissions reduction project at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium.

This strategic partnership, which extends over 15 years of successful cooperation between the two firms, is a crucial step in Fluxys’ commitment to achieving net zero emissions from its operations. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining the send-out capacity at the Zeebrugge regasification terminal, where ConocoPhillips has secured a capacity booking to import and regasify 0.75 million tonnes per year of LNG starting in April 2027.

ConocoPhillips’ LNG sales and purchase agreement to supply the Asian market in 2027 aligns with Fluxys’ sustainability goals. Sacyr Proyecta will oversee the development of FEED services for the installation of new seawater open rack vaporizers (ORV) and pumps, as well as a new intake caisson at the terminal’s port facilities.

Previous Projects and Collaborations

Sacyr Proyecta has a proven track record of successful projects at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal, including the development of FEED services for the fifth LNG tank and a second jetty for LNG carriers of various sizes. The Spanish company also served as the program management contractor (PMC) for Fluxys during the construction of the fifth tank and a second berthing jetty.

In 2023, Sacyr Proyecta completed an engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) project to expand the plant’s regasification capacity and reduce CO2 emissions. The firm’s commitment to decarbonization is evident in its involvement in various projects across Europe and Egypt, promoting innovative and sustainable solutions for a cleaner future.

Decarbonization Efforts

Both Fluxys and Sacyr Proyecta are dedicated to decarbonization initiatives. Fluxys recently partnered with ENAP, Chile’s state-owned oil and gas company, to explore infrastructure opportunities for hydrogen and derivatives in Chile. These collaborations underscore the companies’ commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
