NYK Embraces Bio-LNG Fuel for Maritime Decarbonization

NYK, a leading global shipping company, has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint by initiating the use of bio-LNG fuel on its LNG-powered car carriers. This move is in line with the company’s commitment to maritime decarbonization and sustainability.

The bio-LNG fuel, supplied by Dutch firm Titan Supply at the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, marks a milestone in NYK’s efforts to transition to cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuels. The first vessel to receive the bio-LNG fuel was Daisy Leader on June 15, followed by Sumire Leader on July 18.

Bio-LNG, also known as liquefied biomethane, is a purified form of liquefied methane gas produced from biomass feedstock, such as animal manure and food wastes. By capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, bio-LNG helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the entire life cycle.

The bio-LNG fuel supplied by Titan under the mass balance method is recognized as carbon neutral in the production-to-consumption process (well-to-wake) and is ISCC EU certified. This international standard for sustainability ensures compliance with EU regulations and traceability throughout the supply chain.

Commenting on the collaboration, Niels den Nijs, CEO of Titan Supply, expressed his appreciation for NYK’s decision to adopt bio-LNG fuel, stating, “Titan’s mission is to provide solutions to help the shipping industry transition to cleaner fuels. We are proud to support NYK in their decarbonization efforts through this partnership.”

Kaori Takahashi, NYK Fuel Group General Manager, emphasized the importance of using bio-LNG fuel as a strategic step towards reducing environmental impact and achieving a sustainable future. “Bio-LNG fuel is a highly effective option for decarbonizing the shipping industry, and we are committed to actively promoting its use,” she stated.

NYK’s adoption of bio-LNG fuel underscores the company’s proactive approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By embracing cleaner fuels and innovative solutions, NYK is setting a positive example for the maritime industry and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
