Revolutionizing Carbon Capture in Shipping Industry

Shipping’s first centrifugal onboard carbon capture system has been installed at Turkey’s Besiktas Shipyard aboard an LR2 product tanker owned by Scorpio Tankers. This innovative system marks a significant step towards decarbonization efforts in the maritime industry.

The system, developed by Carbon Ridge, an American firm, is designed for both retrofits and newbuilds. Its modular design reduces space requirements by up to 75% compared to conventional carbon capture columns. The flexible installation options, whether vertical or horizontal, cater to the diverse fleet requirements in the shipping industry. Captured CO2 is compressed, liquefied, and stored for the duration of the voyage, ensuring a more sustainable operation.

One of the key features of Carbon Ridge’s system is its ability to achieve a 90%+ reduction in CO₂ emissions and eliminate over 99% of particulate matter, NOₓ, and SOₓ. This significant environmental impact positions it as a game-changer in the quest for greener shipping practices.

Recently, Carbon Ridge secured additional financing led by Katapult Ocean and Alfa8, with participation from Crosscut Ventures and Berge Bulk. This funding will further support the development and deployment of their innovative carbon capture technology in the maritime sector.

In a statement, Chase Dwyer, CEO and founder of Carbon Ridge, expressed his excitement about the pilot project, saying, “The centrifugal carbon capture system is unlike anything that has been deployed on a vessel before and offers a cost-effective, flexible, and modular solution to support the maritime industry in its decarbonization efforts.”
