Carbon Ridge Deploys Centrifugal Carbon Capture System on Scorpio Tankers’ LR2 Product Tanker

U.S.-based developer Carbon Ridge has made waves in the shipping industry with the deployment of a centrifugal onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) on an LR2 product tanker owned by Scorpio Tankers. This groundbreaking pilot project, initiated in July at Besiktas Shipyard aboard the STI SPIGA, represents a significant step forward in the industry’s efforts towards decarbonization.

Carbon Ridge’s innovative technology offers a cost-effective and efficient solution for capturing and storing carbon emissions. The OCCS is designed to reduce initial capital investment and operational costs while delivering superior capture efficiency compared to traditional technologies. Its compact design saves space by up to 75%, making it a practical choice for the diverse and globally operational fleet of shipping vessels.

The captured CO2 is compressed, liquefied, and safely stored for the duration of the voyage, ensuring a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to emissions management. The successful deployment of this centrifugal OCCS marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s journey towards reducing its carbon footprint.

In addition to the pilot project, Carbon Ridge has secured additional financing from investors such as Katapult Ocean and Alfa8, further solidifying its position as a leader in carbon capture technology. With a total funding of over $20 million, the company is well-positioned to drive innovation and sustainability in the shipping sector.

Chase Dwyer, CEO and Founder of Carbon Ridge, expressed his excitement about the pilot project, stating, “Our technology is specifically designed for the maritime industry, offering a cost-effective, flexible, and modular solution for decarbonization. The centrifugal carbon capture system represents a significant advancement in CCS technology for shipping, and we are eager to see the results of this deployment with our partner Scorpio Tankers.”
