The UNOLS Deep Submergence Science Committee Seeks New Member

The UNOLS Deep Submergence Science Committee (DeSSC) is currently looking to fill a membership vacancy, and they are seeking nominations from qualified individuals to join their ranks.

About DeSSC

The DeSSC is the UNOLS Committee responsible for providing advice and guidance to the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF) operator on matters related to the utilization, upgrades, and long-term planning of its vehicles, which include Alvin, Jason, and Sentry. The Committee focuses on understanding the needs of deep-ocean researchers, advocating for new sensors and equipment, and engaging with early-career scientists to promote the use of NDSF vehicles in deep submergence research.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have experience in the use of deep submergence vehicles. DeSSC is particularly interested in individuals with expertise in geological oceanography to complement the current range of specialties on the committee.

Commitment

Members serve a three-year term with the possibility of re-appointment for a second term. They are expected to attend meetings at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a community meeting prior to either the annual AGU or Ocean Sciences conferences. Virtual participation is possible but not encouraged.

Nomination Process

Nominations should include a brief statement of interest in serving on DeSSC and a 2-page CV, which should be submitted via email to Alice Doyle at the UNOLS office ([email protected]). Self-nominations are encouraged.

Deadline

The deadline for nominations is August 31, 2025. Individuals from institutions already represented on DeSSC or Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are ineligible for appointment.

Additional Information

For more information about DeSSC, visit the DeSSC webpage. For inquiries about committee responsibilities, contact DeSSC Chair Andrew Thurber ([email protected]) or Alice Doyle at the UNOLS office ([email protected]).
