BYD Welcomes New LNG Dual-Fuel Car Carrier
China’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has recently celebrated the addition of a cutting-edge 7,000 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carrier to its fleet. Built by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the vessel named BYD Zhengzhou was officially named and delivered on July 16.
The 199.9-meter-long BYD Zhengzhou stands out for its innovative dual-fuel propulsion system and cutting-edge permanent magnet shaft generator technology, making it an environmentally-friendly addition to BYD’s shipping operations.
Notably, BYD Zhengzhou is part of an upgraded “Green Low-Carbon Version 2.0” series of car carriers built by GSI, showcasing the commitment to sustainable shipping practices by both the manufacturer and the shipbuilder.
BYD Zhengzhou is joined by its sister ship, BYD Hefei, delivered to the vehicle manufacturer earlier this year in January 2025, further expanding the company’s eco-friendly shipping capabilities.
Additionally, BYD has chartered other LNG-powered vessels, including the 7,000 PCTC duo BYD Explorer No. 1 and BYD Changzhou, constructed by CIMC Raffles at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard for Zodiac Maritime, a UK-based shipping company.
Earlier this year, BYD also received the 9,200 CEU dual-fuel car carrier BYD Shenzhen from China Merchants Industry Nanjing Jinling, described as the “largest car carrier delivered in the world.” The vessel features a dual-fuel propulsion system, a battery hybrid system, a shaft generator, and a high-voltage shore power system to ensure zero carbon emissions during terminal operations.
