Revolutionizing Offshore Green Hydrogen Production: Elogen Delivers PEM Electrolyzer for Baseload Power Hub at HKN Wind Farm

Technology company Elogen, a subsidiary of the Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) group, has reached a significant milestone by delivering a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for the Baseload Power Hub (BLPH) at the Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) offshore wind farm. This innovative project is set to transform offshore green hydrogen production and storage.

Collaboration for Sustainable Energy Solutions

The project developer CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, commissioned Elogen for the 2.5 MW PEM electrolyzer. Italian firm Rosetti Marino was contracted for the construction of the BLPH, showcasing a strong collaboration in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Fores Engineering, a subsidiary of the Rosetti Marino Group, was chosen to assemble Elogen’s electrolyzer for the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm, demonstrating a multi-faceted approach to offshore energy production.

Driving Innovation and Energy Transition

Elogen’s successful delivery of the 2.5 MW electrolyzer after the site acceptance test (SAT) highlights a commitment to driving innovation and supporting the energy transition. The BLPH, initially to be installed onshore in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, will store surplus wind energy as green hydrogen for peak demand periods.

The project, completed within a 30-month timeline, will serve as an innovation hub for Delft Offshore Turbine B.V. (DOT), fostering collaboration with institutions like TNO, Groningen Seaports, and Dutch universities.

Empowering a Resilient Energy System

Maria Kalogera, Innovations Manager of CrossWind, emphasized the significance of the electrolyzer in supporting a flexible and resilient energy system. Elogen’s PEM electrolyzer, designed for offshore deployment, symbolizes a key component in addressing renewable energy intermittency.

Eric Minaux, Managing Director of Elogen, praised the agility and robustness of the technology, underscoring the company’s commitment to dynamic energy systems and offshore operations.

Future Prospects and Green Hydrogen Initiatives

Acquired by GTT in 2020, Elogen aims to commercialize significant electrolysis capacity by 2030, aligning with the goals of sustainability and green energy transition. The company’s involvement in AquaVentus, a German offshore wind-to-hydrogen initiative, further underscores its commitment to green hydrogen production and innovation.
