Portugal and South Korea Make Major Drug Seizures
Portugal’s Judicial Police recently made a significant drug bust, seizing over 1.5 metric tons of cocaine hidden within animal hides. This discovery is believed to be part of a larger smuggling operation, with cartels utilizing creative methods to evade detection.
Rotten Hides in Portugal
Acting on intelligence provided by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and Customs and Border Protection, authorities at the Port of Leixoes in Portugal investigated a shipment of animal hides. Upon inspection, they uncovered a large quantity of cocaine concealed within the hides. The investigation was complicated by the putrid state of the hides, which emitted a strong odor.
Following the trail, the police tracked the container to a warehouse near Fafe, where two individuals, including a former police officer, were apprehended. Firearms, vehicles, and motorcycles were also seized as part of the operation.
This seizure highlights the cartels’ evolving tactics in drug trafficking, as they explore new methods and routes to transport illegal substances.
Busan, South Korea’s Record Seizure
In a separate incident, South Korean authorities announced their largest drug seizure at the Busan New Port, with 600 kg of cocaine valued at $216 million confiscated. The container, suspected to have originated from Central or South America, was intercepted before reaching its intended destination.
An extensive investigation involving the questioning of crew members and thorough searches of the vessel led authorities to conclude that the shipment was likely misdirected. Despite the absence of a GPS tracking device, law enforcement managed to collect crucial evidence, including fingerprints from the packages and container interior.
This seizure marks the second major drug bust in South Korea in 2025, underscoring the persistent efforts of authorities to combat drug trafficking through heightened surveillance and coordination with international partners.
