ABS Certifies HD Hyundai’s Breakerless-MVDC Power System for Ships

ABS, a leading classification society, has recently issued a New Technology Qualification certificate to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for their innovative Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) power system for ships. This breakthrough technology represents a significant advancement in electric propulsion solutions for the maritime industry.

The Breakerless-MVDC Power System, developed by HD Hyundai, is built upon their modular propulsion drive system and has become the first of its kind to receive an ABS NTQ certificate. This certification signifies the technology’s feasibility and maturity following a rigorous evaluation process conducted by ABS.

This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort between ABS, HD HHI, and HD KSOE, with a shared commitment to exploring and implementing cutting-edge solutions in marine electrification. The three entities entered into an agreement in 2024 to investigate the feasibility of MVDC power systems for ships, culminating in the successful certification of the Breakerless-MVDC Power System.

Looking ahead, the project team is focused on developing new ABS requirements for high voltage systems and introducing a new ABS notation to further enhance the industry’s understanding and adoption of MVDC power systems.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving technological progress within the maritime sector. He stated, “Collaboration is key to safely accelerating the technological progress that the maritime industry demands. We’re excited to deepen our relationship with HD KSOE and HD HHI, jointly exploring forward-thinking solutions that will shape and refine the next generation of vessels.”

Sanghyun Kim, HD KSOE Senior Vice President, highlighted the significance of the MVDC power system’s certification by ABS for both commercial and naval vessels. He expressed confidence in HD Hyundai’s advanced capabilities in marine electrification and their commitment to leading the way in the commercialization of zero-carbon electric propulsion vessels.

Overall, ABS’s certification of HD Hyundai’s Breakerless-MVDC Power System marks a significant milestone in the advancement of electric propulsion technologies for ships. This achievement not only demonstrates the technical prowess of HD Hyundai and HD KSOE but also underscores ABS’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable solutions in the maritime industry.
