Türkiye-based Arkas Bunker Completes Biofuel Bunkering Operations in Istanbul
Türkiye-based fuel supplier Arkas Bunker has completed two biofuel bunkering operations in Istanbul, marking the company’s next step in pushing forward its sustainability-focused operations.
Arkas Bunker supplied a total of 685 tons of Bio24F biofuel, a blend of ISCC-certified 24% used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) with 76% very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO). The biofuel was provided for vessels owned by Brazil’s CITROSUCO and the Turkish company DİTAŞ.
The first bunkering operation took place on July 26, where Arkas Bunker supplied 500 tons of Bio24F biofuel to CITROSUCO’s Liberia-flagged fruit juice tanker Carlos Fischer. The operation was conducted by the Ulucak barge. The second bunkering occurred on August 7, involving the provision of 185 tons of Bio24F to DİTAŞ’s scrubber-fitted T.Adalyn by the Alsancak 2 barge.
Arkas Bunker, headquartered in Izmir, is the first in Türkiye to obtain the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) for marine fuels. The company started using biofuel in the Turkish maritime sector in October last year by providing Bio24F fuel to Arkas Line’s container vessel Matilde A.
With the growing demand for renewable fuel sources, the Turkish biofuel market has seen significant growth. In 2024, the country’s solid biofuel market experienced a 30% increase, reaching $51 million. Globally, the biofuel market is projected to reach $225.9 billion by 2028.
Despite the optimistic outlook, Norway’s energy research company Rystad Energy emphasized the need for more investment and technical development in biofuels, including bio-LNG, to overcome restrictions in allocation and production and move towards a net-zero carbon emissions future.
