Eastern Shipbuilding Group to Construct Hybrid-Electric Ferries for Washington State

Eastern Shipbuilding Group has been awarded the Notice to Proceed from Washington State Ferries (WSF) to build two state-of-the-art hybrid-electric ferries with an option for an additional two vessels. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first competitive bid for ferry construction in over 25 years for the nation’s largest ferry system.

David Sowers, Washington State Ferries’ Electrification Program Administrator, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “This is an exciting milestone in bringing new hybrid-electric ferries to our fleet. These vessels will incorporate cutting-edge technologies in shoreside charging and battery storage to reduce diesel-generated emissions, while providing reliable service for the communities we serve.”

Joey D’Isernia, CEO of Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc., also shared his enthusiasm for the initiative, saying, “We are honored to move forward with Washington State Ferries on this historic project. Our commitment is to deliver world-class vessels that showcase American shipbuilding, innovation, and environmental stewardship.”

Key Features of the Hybrid-Electric Ferries

The hybrid/electric vessels will have a length overall of 409’-6”, a beam of 83’-2”, and a hull depth of 24’-6”. They will be capable of transporting 160 standard-sized passenger vehicles and 1500 passengers. With a draft of 16’-6”, the ferries will achieve a speed of 17 knots at full load and are designed to seamlessly interface with all existing WSF dock facilities.

Washington State’s investment in these hybrid-electric ferries underscores its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry. By adopting advanced technologies and eco-friendly solutions, the state aims to reduce its carbon footprint and provide efficient transportation services to its residents.
