Coastal Bend LNG Initiates Carbon Capture FEED Study with Solvanic

Coastal Bend LNG, a leading energy infrastructure development company, has taken a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions at its planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Texas. The company has announced the commencement of a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study in collaboration with Solvanic for electrochemically mediated amine regeneration (EMAR) carbon capture.

This innovative technology, originally developed by Professor T. Alan Hatton at MIT, offers a more efficient and cost-effective method for capturing carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas processing and cogeneration facilities. Nick Flores, CEO of Coastal Bend LNG, expressed optimism about the potential of the EMAR technology in achieving the company’s low carbon intensity LNG goals.

Unlike traditional thermal amine systems, EMAR utilizes an electrochemical process to release captured CO2 using electricity, resulting in reduced energy consumption and enhanced operational flexibility. The technology, which has undergone significant advancements under the leadership of Dr. Michael Massen-Hane and Dr. Michael Nitzsche, promises to revolutionize emissions reduction efforts in the energy sector.

Dr. Nitzsche emphasized the progress made in scaling up the EMAR solution to address emissions from various sources, with the FEED study marking a crucial milestone in its commercialization. Coastal Bend LNG’s decision to incorporate this technology aligns with its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

In addition to its carbon capture initiatives, Coastal Bend LNG has selected ConocoPhillips’ Optimized Cascade process technology for its upcoming LNG development project in Texas. The project, expected to include multiple liquefaction trains, cogeneration facilities, and export infrastructure, aims to establish a leading position in the global LNG market while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
