The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) Expands Collaboration with Japan

The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has recently engaged in discussions with officials from both the private and public sectors in Japan to explore the establishment of a new industrial zone and enhance cooperation in green fuel bunkering.

At a gathering in Tokyo, Egyptian and Japanese companies, along with government representatives, convened to bolster bilateral economic ties and reinforce joint investment ventures.

During the event, SCZONE and its Japanese counterparts sealed two agreements. The first agreement, signed by Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation and Egypt’s Orascom Construction, aims to develop and operate integrated facilities for supplying vessels with ammonia as a marine fuel at SCZONE’s East Port Said and Sokhna ports. This initiative seeks to reduce emissions and support SCZONE’s commitment to sustainable energy for the maritime industry.

The second agreement was reached with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) to foster collaboration in the field of green hydrogen for ship bunkering through knowledge sharing, demand stimulation, and promoting clean energy applications.

Furthermore, SCZONE representatives met with Sumitomo Corporation to discuss establishing a new industrial zone within SCZONE under the developer model to attract investments from Asia. Partnership opportunities in bunkering, green hydrogen production, and the application of green steel were also explored to accelerate decarbonization efforts.

Chairman of SCZONE, Waleid Gamal El-Dien, emphasized the significance of collaboration between Egypt and Japan, citing their shared vision for sustainable development. He highlighted SCZONE’s strategic location at the crossroads of global trade routes, linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, making it a pivotal hub for international commerce.

Earlier discussions with the Ambassador of Belgium to Cairo, François Cornet d’Elzius, in February 2024, underscored SCZONE’s commitment to green fuel projects and partnerships with international stakeholders.

In recent months, SCZONE has inked significant deals in the green fuel sector, including a bunkering agreement with Norwegian company Scatec and several green hydrogen agreements with the Egyptian government.
