APM Terminals Completes Final Phase of Expansion at MedPort Tangier

APM Terminals has successfully wrapped up the last phase of its expansive growth project at MedPort Tangier, bolstering its capacity by 2 million TEUs and solidifying its position as one of the world’s most advanced container terminals.

This milestone achievement signifies a significant moment for the Maersk-operated facility, now boasting an impressive annual capacity of 5.2 million TEUs and a two-kilometer berth length. The timing of this expansion aligns perfectly with the upcoming network collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, scheduled to commence in February 2025.

Managing Director at APM Terminals West Med, Keld Pedersen, expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating, “Almost exactly a year ago, the second phase of our expansion went live — this month we have added an additional 1 million TEU to our capacity here in Tangier.”

The strategic significance of the terminal is emphasized by its role in the Gemini Cooperation, serving as a vital hub-port for Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s East-West trade routes. Tangier was recently ranked as the fourth most efficient container terminal globally by the World Bank and S&P Global.

Alongside creating numerous job opportunities with 500 new positions filled during 2023 and 2024, the facility showcases state-of-the-art technology such as auto mooring systems, digital berth planning, and the specialized Gemini simulation tool.

Environmental sustainability was also a key focus during the expansion, with Pedersen highlighting, “The expansion brings with it advanced technology that helps us reduce port hours, improve crane productivity, and reduce direct emissions from vessels by utilizing shore-power.”
