The Port of Shanghai Sets a New Record with Over 50 Million TEUs Handled Annually

The Port of Shanghai has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first port in the world to handle over 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in annual container throughput, as reported by Xinhua on Monday.

This new record solidifies Shanghai Port’s 14-year reign as the busiest port in container shipping and underscores China’s increasing influence in global trade.

With an extensive network spanning 350 international routes connecting to more than 700 ports across 200+ countries and regions, Shanghai Port has cemented its position as a crucial hub for international trade.

An official at Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG) attributed the volume growth to a rise in export containers and an increase in international transfers and ship-to-ship operations. Ship-to-ship transfers at the port are expected to reach a record 60 percent in 2024.

The report also highlighted the port’s technological advancements, particularly with the launch of the Yangshan phase IV automated terminal in 2017. This initiative boosted efficiency by 30% and reduced workforce requirements by 70%, showcasing Shanghai Port’s commitment to innovation.

Looking towards the future, Shanghai Port is embracing sustainability efforts by collaborating with ports in Los Angeles and Hamburg to develop eco-friendly shipping corridors. SIPG energy manager Luo Wenbin shared plans to transform Shanghai into a “green energy fueling center,” with a focus on expanding LNG and green methanol capacity by 2030.
