CMA CGM to Deploy 100% Electric Barge in Vietnam

CMA CGM, a leading shipping company, has announced plans to deploy a 100% electric barge in Vietnam starting from 2026. The barge will be powered by green electricity and supported by dedicated charging infrastructure, including a new solar farm at the Gemalink Terminal in Cai Mep, southern Vietnam.

The electric barge will operate on a 180 km return route between Binh Duong province and the Gemalink terminal, emitting zero greenhouse gases. It is expected to handle over 50,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) per year, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solution.

Global sportswear giant Nike has already committed to using the e-barge for its shipments on the route, showcasing a commitment to sustainable logistics practices.

Christine Cabau-Woehrel, executive vice president at CMA CGM, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are looking forward to duplicating and adapting this innovative solution with other cargo owners wishing to find sustainable transport modes.”
