The Dutch/German TSO TenneT Selects NKT for HVDC Power Cable Systems

Source: NKT

The Dutch/German transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT has chosen NKT to provide high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore and offshore power cable systems for two projects as part of TenneT’s 2 GW program.

Valued at approximately €1 billion, the contracts are scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2027. NKT will be responsible for cable design, engineering, production, and both onshore and offshore installation.

Projects Overview

Denmark’s NKT has been awarded two projects by TenneT, namely LanWin7 and a segment of NordOstLink in Germany. These projects bring NKT’s total contracts under the framework agreement to five, valid until 2028 with an extension option through 2031.

LanWin7

For LanWin7, spanning 320 kilometers, NKT will deliver an onshore and offshore 525 kV XLPE HVDC power cable system. This project is a key component of the offshore grid connection systems aimed at linking to the multi-terminal hub in Pöschendorf, Schleswig-Holstein.

The NordHub will serve as an integration point for multiple DC and AC connections, facilitating the transmission of offshore wind power from the North Sea to the onshore grid.

NordOstLink

The NordOstLink project includes a partial route length of 65 kilometers for an onshore 525 kV HVDC power cable system. Additional cables will be laid to boost grid capacity and flexibility, enhancing overall system performance.

Both projects are expected to be commissioned in 2033-2034, contributing to the advancement of renewable energy integration and grid infrastructure development in the region.
