Jan De Nul and Hellenic Cables to Supply Export Cables for French Floating Wind Farms

Belgium-based offshore installation contractor Jan De Nul, in partnership with Greek cable maker Hellenic Cables, has secured a framework agreement to supply and install export cables for two 750 MW floating wind farms off the coast of Southern Brittany in France. The agreement, signed with France’s transmission system operator RTE, aims to connect future wind farms to an offshore power grid.

Jan De Nul will be responsible for installing the cables that will transport renewable energy from France’s first commercial-scale floating wind farms from the offshore substation to the shore. Working alongside Hellenic Cables, the companies will design, manufacture, install, and protect three high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) 225 kV cable systems, covering a total distance of approximately 150 kilometers. Additionally, the marine contractor will embed the cables in the seabed for stability.

Hellenic Cables will also supply 240 kilometers of onshore cables, produced at their land cables facility in Thiva, Greece. The projects will be executed under an EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation) contract with RTE, scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2026.

Filip Olde Bijvank, Head of Commercial Offshore Cables at Jan De Nul Group, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing the energy transition and supporting clients in achieving their sustainability goals through projects like this. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and strategic planning in delivering successful outcomes.

Wouter Vermeersch, Manager Offshore Cables at Jan De Nul Group, highlighted the benefits of framework agreements in streamlining the production, transportation, installation, and protection of cables. By closely working with clients, Jan De Nul ensures a smooth and efficient delivery process, ultimately supporting the development of floating offshore wind energy in France.

This partnership between Jan De Nul and Hellenic Cables marks a significant step towards harnessing the potential of floating wind farms and promoting sustainable energy practices in France. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, the companies are poised to contribute to the growth of offshore renewable energy infrastructure in the region.
