Oldendorff Carriers is pleased to announce the successful installation and operational deployment of Norsepower rotor sails on the post-Panamax bulk carrier Chinook Oldendorff.

Following a collaborative agreement with Elk Valley Resources (EVR) in December 2023, the vessel, previously known as Dietrich Oldendorff, now transports EVR steelmaking coal from the Port of Vancouver to customers across the Pacific Ocean.

Renamed as the Chinook Oldendorff, the vessel symbolizes the harmonious integration of rotor sail technology with the natural wind patterns in the Pacific Northwest. The Chinook winds, both coastal and inland, play a significant role in this synergy.

Russ McNeil, managing director of Oldendorff Vancouver, commented, “The collaboration with EVR on this project demonstrates the power of partnerships in driving meaningful progress. The Chinook Oldendorff showcases our commitment to delivering environmentally conscious solutions that align with our clients’ needs and our sustainability objectives.”

Equipped with Norsepower rotor sails, the Chinook Oldendorff utilizes wind energy to enhance propulsion, aiming to reduce fuel consumption on transpacific voyages by an estimated 10-15%.

“We commend Oldendorff Carriers and Elk Valley Resources for their proactive stance in emissions reduction within the shipping industry. Their innovative initiatives align with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s dedication to environmental preservation, and we are delighted to welcome the Chinook Oldendorff at the Port of Vancouver,” stated Jennifer Natland, vice-president of properties and environment at Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
