Maersk Tankers to Deploy Largest Suction Sails Fleet

In a groundbreaking move, Maersk Tankers has announced the deployment of suction sails on five of its MR vessels, marking the largest such deployment in the world to date. Barcelona-based bound4blue will supply and install the innovative eSAILs on the tankers.

Partnering with green technology specialist Njord Solutions, Maersk Tankers selected the eSAIL as the optimal wind-assisted propulsion system for the project. Njord Solutions, originally founded by Maersk Tankers, will lead the integration and installation of the systems, ensuring maximum fuel savings and environmental impact.

The autonomous eSAILs operate by harnessing aerodynamic lift generated by dragging air across their surface, resulting in significant reductions in fuel consumption, operational costs, and emissions.

Each of the five Maersk Tankers vessels – Maersk Tacoma, Maersk Tampa, Maersk Tangier, Maersk Teesport, and Maersk Tokyo – will be equipped with four 26-meter eSAILs. The suction sails are expected to deliver substantial double-digit percentage reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per vessel.

Commenting on the initiative, Maersk Tankers’ Chief Investment Officer Claus Grønborg emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing sustainability in the tanker industry. By investing in advanced energy-efficient technologies like wind-assisted propulsion systems, Maersk Tankers aims to support its customers’ sustainability goals while aligning with global environmental objectives.

Maersk Tankers’ dedication to sustainability extends beyond the deployment of suction sails. The company has previously introduced rotor sails on the Maersk Pelican in 2018 and continues to explore energy-saving devices and alternative marine fuels like methanol and ammonia.

With this ambitious project, Maersk Tankers sets a new standard for sustainable shipping practices, paving the way for greater industry-wide adoption of innovative and eco-friendly propulsion technologies.
