DHI: Leading the Way in Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Testing

DHI is at the forefront of providing biological performance testing for the type approval of ballast water management systems (BWMS) in accordance with the stringent requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United States Coast Guard.

The IMO flag state and US authorities rely on classification societies or independent laboratories to represent them in the type approval process. DHI collaborates with renowned entities such as DNV GL, Lloyd’s Register, and Korean Register to conduct type approval testing of BWMS.

Advancing Ballast Water Testing and Technology

With over 20 BWMS manufacturers entrusting their systems to DHI for testing, the organization has become a trusted partner for type approval tests. Manufacturers often return to DHI for testing new models or alternative filtration technologies, benefiting from DHI’s independent verification of biological treatment efficacy.

Aside from facilitating the granting of type approval, the biological performance tests conducted by DHI also provide valuable insights into the technical properties, treatment capabilities, and limitations of the BWMS, empowering ship-owners with essential information.

Land-based and Shipboard Testing Excellence

The type approval process for BWMS involves efficacy tests conducted at both a land-based facility and on board a vessel. DHI’s state-of-the-art land-based test facility in Hundested, Denmark, boasts unparalleled flexibility, allowing for simultaneous testing of up to five BWMS. The facility includes source and retention tanks with varying capacities, as well as a high-flow pump.

Furthermore, DHI conducts shipboard tests worldwide, offering quick initiation and flexibility to accommodate vessel schedules.

Efficient Type Approval Process

DHI recognizes the critical importance of time-to-market for BWMS manufacturers seeking type approval. Despite the potentially lengthy testing program duration, DHI ensures efficiency at every stage, offering pilot testing to establish performance claims, completing type approval testing, and delivering high-quality reports promptly. The organization has successfully completed numerous type approval tests meeting US requirements.

All type approval tests conducted by DHI adhere to ISO 17025 standards and are accredited by the Danish Accreditation Fund.

Customer-Centric Approach

Customers from Asia, Europe, and North America trust DHI for their BWMS type approval needs. The international composition of DHI’s ballast water team, comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, enables the organization to deliver exceptional service tailored to each customer’s requirements.
