Royal Boskalis Unveils Plans for World’s Largest Subsea Rock Installation Vessel

Royal Boskalis B.V. has recently announced its ambitious plans for the Windpiper, a groundbreaking vessel that is set to become the world’s largest subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel. With an impressive cargo capacity of 45,500 metric tons, the Windpiper is expected to revolutionize the industry.

Anticipated to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026, the vessel will reinforce Boskalis’ position as a leader in specialized subsea rock installation. The addition of the Windpiper will effectively double the company’s capacity when combined with its existing fleet of three vessels.

Key Features and Specifications

The Windpiper boasts impressive specifications, measuring 227 meters in length and 40 meters in breadth, with a power output exceeding 31,000 kW. Equipped with both a moonpool and an inclined fall pipe system, the vessel is specifically designed to safeguard offshore wind turbine foundations.

One of the most notable aspects of the Windpiper is its sustainable approach to development. Rather than constructing a new vessel from scratch, Boskalis has opted to convert an existing one, showcasing its commitment to environmental responsibility while ensuring a faster market entry.

Efficiency and Versatility

The vessel’s substantial cargo capacity, housed in two holds, makes it exceptionally efficient for long-distance projects in regions such as the North American East Coast, Baltic Sea, and Southern North Sea. By reducing the number of required round trips, the Windpiper not only minimizes emissions but also enhances cost efficiency.

Featuring over 100 single-occupancy cabins and DP2 certification, the Windpiper is designed for extended offshore operations in challenging conditions, providing a comfortable living and working environment for both crew members and client representatives.

Future Endeavors

The Windpiper is slated to kick off its operations in Northwest Europe, where it will play a vital role in supporting the region’s burgeoning offshore wind sector. With its cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, the vessel is poised to make a significant impact on the industry.
