Norway’s TMC Compressors Secures Contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for LNG Carriers

Leading Norway-based TMC Compressors has recently announced a significant contract with South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to supply marine compressed air systems for a fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being constructed for a prominent national energy company.

TMC’s scope of work includes providing a comprehensive marine compressed air system, comprising control and service air compressors, for a total of 15 vessels. These vessels are set to be chartered by a major player in the LNG shipping industry.

“Our marine compressors are engineered with a focus on energy efficiency and easy maintenance. The design allows the vessel crew to perform maintenance tasks even while at sea, contributing to a cost-effective lifecycle approach that is increasingly preferred by shipyards and shipowners,” stated Hans Petter Tanum, TMC’s director of sales and business development.

While the specific value of the contract remains undisclosed, TMC describes it as substantial, with the compressors slated for manufacturing at one of its European facilities.

This recent partnership with SHI follows TMC’s successful contract for 17 LNG carriers with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in August 2024. These vessels are also intended for the same national energy company, showcasing TMC’s strong presence in the LNG carrier market.

Prior to these agreements, TMC was selected by Hanwha Ocean, a key player in South Korea’s shipbuilding industry, to supply marine compressed air systems for three LNG carriers commissioned by an Asian shipowner.

On a separate note, SHI recently delivered the LNG carrier Quest Kirishima, commissioned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line). The vessel is slated for charter to Q United Energy Supply & Trading, a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power.
