Value Maritime Secures Funding for Carbon-Capture Technology on Samskip Vessel

Value Maritime has recently announced that it has received funding from the Dutch government to implement a new version of its innovative carbon-capture technology on a vessel owned by Samskip, a valued customer. This marks another milestone in the partnership between Value Maritime and Samskip, as the latter has previously installed scrubber/carbon capture systems on the boxships Samskip Innovator and Samskip Endeavor, both of which are biofuel-driven feeders operating between the UK and the Netherlands.

The collaboration between Samskip and Value Maritime led to a successful application for funding from the Netherlands’ Maritime Masterplan program, resulting in the selection of their joint demonstration project. The project will focus on developing, building, and installing an extra-compact carbon capture system on the Samskip Kvitbjorn, an LNG-fueled ro/ro freight ferry that travels between Rotterdam and Hammerfest.

The new carbon capture system draws on the expertise gained from Value Maritime’s first-generation CO2 capture/SOx scrubber system, initially installed on the Nordica. This system has been adopted by various small cargo vessels and tankers. The upgraded version on the Samskip Kvitbjorn is designed to remove and capture up to 40% of CO2 emissions from the ship’s exhaust gas, which will be stored onboard for further processing.

What sets this new system apart is its compact design, with a reduced height and footprint by one third compared to existing models, making it the smallest of its kind globally. Additionally, the system will be integrated with an exhaust gas heat recovery system to generate electricity from flue gas, enhancing the vessel’s fuel efficiency.

Investment in CO2 Offloading and Processing Hub

In addition to the advancements in carbon-capture technology, Value Group has also secured a $2 million investment from Energietransitiefonds Rotterdam for the development of a hub dedicated to CO2 offloading and processing in Rotterdam. The hub will facilitate the offloading of captured CO2 stored in liquid amine from vessels like the Samskip Kvitbjorn. The extracted CO2 will then be processed onshore, while fresh amine is replenished on the vessel for continued carbon capture operations.

This investment in infrastructure highlights Value Group’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry. The combination of innovative carbon-capture technology and efficient offloading processes signals a promising future for environmentally conscious shipping operations.
