The Arrival of BYD Hefei: China’s First LNG-Powered PCTC

The first 7,000 CEU liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) owned by China’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has been delivered.

BYD Hefei, the latest addition to the fleet, set sail on its maiden voyage on January 7, 2025, after a successful delivery ceremony. Constructed by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the vessel represents a significant milestone in China’s maritime industry.

Key Features of BYD Hefei

With an overall length of 199.9 meters, a width of 38 meters, and a draft of 9 meters, BYD Hefei is an upgraded version dubbed “Green Low-Carbon Version 2.0” of the renowned car carrier series built by GSI. The vessel boasts a dual-fuel propulsion system, a magnet shaft generator, and various energy-saving technologies, contributing to a remarkable 30% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Expansion of China’s Automotive Export Capacity

BYD’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond BYD Hefei, as the company has another vessel on order at GSI. These ships are poised to enhance China’s ability to export locally manufactured automobiles efficiently.

Continued Growth in PCTC Segment

GSI’s prominence in the PCTC building sector continues to rise, with nearly 40 orders secured for car carriers. By the end of 2024, GSI had delivered twelve 7,000-vehicle LNG dual-fuel car carriers, totaling 84,000 CEU. Among these deliveries was the LNG dual-fuel Glovis Sunshine, constructed for H-Line Shipping and leased to Hyundai Glovis.

Collaboration for Sustainable Logistics

In a strategic move towards sustainable logistics, Hyundai Glovis and BYD signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in September 2024. This partnership aims to leverage PCTCs and global container logistics infrastructure for efficient transportation of finished vehicles.

With the introduction of BYD Hefei and ongoing developments in LNG-powered PCTCs, China’s maritime industry is paving the way for eco-friendly transportation solutions and reinforcing its position in the global automotive export market.
