Nexans Secures €1 Billion LanWin2 Offshore Grid Connection Contract

Nexans has recently been awarded the contract for the LanWin2 offshore grid connection in Germany, valued at €1 billion. This project falls under the framework agreement that TenneT, the Dutch grid operator, awarded to the French subsea cable supplier in May 2023.

The scope of the LanWin2 project includes the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of 250 kilometers of 525 kV high-voltage direct current, cross-linked polyethylene (HVDC XLPE) onshore and offshore export cable systems. These cable systems will be responsible for transmitting 2 GW of offshore wind energy from the German North Sea to the mainland.

Expected to be commissioned in 2030, LanWin2 is part of TenneT’s 2 GW offshore grid connection development program in the German North Sea.

In addition to LanWin2, TenneT awarded framework agreements worth €5.5 billion to NKT, Nexans, and a consortium of Jan De Nul, LS Cable, and Denys in May 2023 for 525 kV HVDC cable systems for ten offshore wind projects in the Netherlands and Germany.

Under these agreements, Nexans will also work on the BalWin3 and LanWin4 projects, which will connect to the national grid in Wilhelmshaven and the Heide area in Schleswig-Holstein, respectively.

In March 2024, Nexans signed a call-off contract with TenneT for the BalWin3 and LanWin3 projects, further solidifying its involvement in the offshore wind energy sector.

It is worth noting that the offshore converter platforms for all three projects will be constructed by the Siemens Energy-Dragados Offshore consortium, adding another layer of collaboration to these significant infrastructure developments in Germany.
