Norway’s Wallenius Wilhelmsen Wins Concession to Operate Vehicle Terminal at Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg
Norway’s Wallenius Wilhelmsen has secured a 12-year concession to operate the vehicle and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) terminal at Sweden’s prestigious Port of Gothenburg. This significant development comes as the company has committed to making strategic investments to enhance and strengthen the terminal’s operations.
Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, expressed his confidence in Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s capabilities, stating, “We are very optimistic about Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ability to continue developing the vehicle and RoRo terminal at the Port of Gothenburg. The company has presented a strong business plan and has credibly demonstrated how they will achieve the volume targets they have committed to and operate a competitive terminal with a customer-centric approach.”
The Port of Gothenburg, as the largest port in Scandinavia, plays a crucial role in handling a significant portion of Swedish foreign trade and container traffic. With a focus on sustainability, innovation, and digitalization, the port aims to establish itself as the world’s most competitive port.
Selection Process and Investment Commitments
Wallenius Wilhelmsen stood out among several strong contenders vying to operate the terminal, thanks to its extensive experience in terminal operations globally. The Norwegian company’s commitment to infrastructure investments and operational excellence set it apart from the competition.
Upon taking over operations in February next year from Logent Ports and Terminals, Wallenius Wilhelmsen plans to establish a new independent company dedicated to running the terminal. The company has pledged to invest approximately $6.1 million in modernizing the terminal’s infrastructure to enhance its market offerings.
Expanding Services and Enhancing Efficiency
Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to transform the terminal into a comprehensive “one-stop-shop” for carriers and customers, offering services beyond vehicle loading and unloading. These include pre-delivery inspections, handling of project cargo, and high & heavy goods, catering to diverse logistical needs.

Strategic Positioning and Growth Prospects
The Port of Gothenburg’s vehicle and RoRo terminal boasts strategic advantages, including rail connectivity, pre-delivery inspection facilities, and ample terminal space. With a steady increase in vehicle volumes in recent years, the port remains a key hub connecting Nordic countries with global regions.
In 2023, vehicle volumes at the port increased by 14 percent, solidifying its position as Sweden’s largest vehicle port. This growth trajectory aligns with Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s vision of innovative and sustainable expansion in the Scandinavian market.
With the addition of Gothenburg as its ninth terminal, Wallenius Wilhelmsen strengthens its RoRo logistical expertise, further enhancing its global network spanning multiple continents.
