The European Commission Launches Call for Evidence to Shape European Oceans Pact

The European Commission has initiated a call for evidence to influence the development of the European Oceans Pact, a strategic initiative designed to advance sustainable ocean management practices. This pivotal pact was introduced by President von der Leyen as a key component of the political agenda for the upcoming European Commission term spanning from 2024 to 2029.

Key objectives of the European Oceans Pact include:

  • Maintaining the health, resilience, and productivity of the ocean ecosystem.
  • Promoting a sustainable and competitive blue economy, encompassing fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Advocating for a comprehensive marine knowledge, research, innovation, and investment agenda.

The call for evidence is open for submissions until February 17, 2025, with the European Commission anticipating a diverse array of inputs from stakeholders, subject matter experts, and the general public. The insights gathered through this consultation process will play a critical role in shaping the final version of the European Oceans Pact, which is slated for unveiling in time for the 3rd UN Ocean Conference scheduled for June 2025.

This call for evidence represents a unique opportunity for individuals and organizations to contribute to the development of policies and initiatives that will drive sustainable ocean management practices and foster a thriving blue economy across Europe and beyond.
