BP Achieves Major Milestone in FLNG Commissioning Activities

With floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) commissioning activities in full swing, BP, the UK-headquartered energy giant, has achieved another first at a gas development off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal. The project, known as Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1, is deemed the biggest project in BP’s portfolio and one of the deepest, most complex gas developments in Africa.

BP’s GTA Phase 1 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project recently saw the first gas flow from its subsea wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) GTA. This milestone has marked the initiation of full commissioning for Golar LNG’s FLNG Gimi, which received feed gas from the FPSO on January 18, 2025.

Golar LNG has reported that advanced commissioning work is underway using gas from the British Sponsor LNG carrier, with the first LNG export cargo expected in Q1 2025 and full commercial operations anticipated in Q2 2025, pending all conditions being met.

The COD will trigger a 20-year lease and operate agreement, unlocking significant EBITDA backlog for Golar LNG. The GTA Phase 1 development, featuring the deepest subsea infrastructure in Africa with wells in water depths of up to 2,850 meters, is projected to produce around 2.3 million tons of LNG annually for over 20 years.

Gas from the FPSO GTA undergoes processing offshore before being transferred via pipeline to the FLNG Gimi. BP, as the operator of GTA with a 56% working interest, is joined by Kosmos Energy (27%), Petrosen (10%), and SMH (7%) in this venture.

BP has highlighted the significance of the GTA gas development, which holds enough gas resources to support production for at least two decades, totaling around 15 trillion cubic feet. The company is actively engaged in various projects worldwide, with ongoing activities in the Mediterranean Sea and the East Mediterranean.
