Germany’s Mabanaft to Convert Tanks for Methanol Storage in Port of Hamburg
Germany’s energy company Mabanaft is embarking on a new project to convert four tanks at the Blumensand tank terminal in the Port of Hamburg to enable the storage of methanol. This initiative is part of Mabanaft’s commitment to supporting its customers’ transition towards greener alternatives and meeting the growing demand for methanol in various sectors.
Investing in Methanol Storage
Mabanaft plans to retrofit the tanks from mid-2025, with methanol storage operations expected to commence in 2027. The company will import methanol itself and distribute it in Germany and potentially other locations. The four tanks have a total capacity of approximately 20,000 cubic meters and will be converted in two stages, pending approval from the Hamburg Authority of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA).
Transitioning to Low-Carbon Methanol
According to Joost Vespermann, Business Developer in Mabanaft’s Sustainable Fuels division, CO2-reduced methanol can be produced through various methods, including e-methanol synthesis, biomethanol production, and blue methanol production. These low-carbon methanol options cater to different regional legislation and customer preferences, offering a sustainable fuel solution for the future.
Oleksandr Siromakha, Head of Sustainable Fuels at Mabanaft, highlighted the company’s commitment to providing a diverse range of sustainable fuel options for its customers, including bio-blends, hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. By simplifying the transition to alternative fuels, Mabanaft aims to support its customers in decarbonizing their operations and navigating the challenges of sustainability.
Future Plans for Sustainable Fuel Infrastructure
In addition to the methanol storage project, Mabanaft has submitted approval documents for the construction of an ammonia import terminal in Hamburg in 2024. This terminal is expected to complement the company’s efforts in sustainable fuel infrastructure and further expand its capabilities in providing eco-friendly fuel solutions.
With these strategic initiatives, Mabanaft is positioning itself as a key player in the transition to sustainable fuels in Northern Germany and beyond. By investing in methanol storage and expanding its sustainable fuel offerings, the company is paving the way for a greener future in the energy industry.
