The Gulf of Mexico Officially Renamed as the Gulf of America

In a significant move directed by President Trump, the US Department of Interior (DOI) has officially announced that the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) will now be known as the Gulf of America.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a division under the Department of the Interior, is currently working diligently to update the federal nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System to reflect this change. This renaming is effective immediately for federal use.

The DOI released a statement saying, “The Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, is a crucial asset in the nation’s history and economy. With over 1,700 miles of U.S. coastline and nearly 160 million acres, the Gulf has played a vital role in America’s trade, energy production, and maritime industries.”

From its bountiful fisheries that support local economies to its vast reserves of oil and natural gas that drive innovation and prosperity, the Gulf of America has been a cornerstone of the nation’s growth. Its ports are among the largest and most advanced in the world, facilitating the connection of American goods to global markets.

The statement further adds, “President Trump’s directive acknowledges the Gulf’s enduring contributions to the economic strength and vitality of the United States by officially renaming it the Gulf of America.”
