The Port of Los Angeles Sets Record Container Throughput in 2024

The Port of Los Angeles has solidified its position as the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere, achieving a significant surge in throughput in 2024. Last year marked the second-best year in the port’s 117-year history in terms of container volumes.

According to reports, the port handled a total of 10.3 million container units in 2024, representing a remarkable 20 percent increase compared to the previous year. Loaded imports saw a substantial 26.4 percent growth to 460,915 TEU, while loaded exports experienced a slight decline of nine percent to 110,483 TEU.

Despite facing challenges such as labor issues, supply chain disruptions, and tariff wars, the Port of Los Angeles managed to sustain year-on-year growth in container throughput. The port’s success has been attributed to its strategic focus on people, planet, and performance.

Investments in Infrastructure and Sustainability

The port has invested in infrastructure improvements to enhance efficiency and accommodate cargo volume growth. Projects such as the $73 million Pier 400 On-Dock rail expansion and the ongoing rail expansion at Fenix Marine Pier 300 have contributed to operational enhancements.

Furthermore, the Port of Los Angeles has made significant strides in sustainability efforts, reducing emissions to their lowest levels since 2005. With a commitment to achieving zero emissions, the port is investing $640 million in new cargo handling equipment, trucks, charging stations, and a hydrogen hub project. It is also collaborating with other ports to establish green shipping corridors and promote decarbonization in the industry.

Additionally, the port is working on a $500 million enhancement project in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to support electric equipment and clean shore power operations.

Record Cruise Business Growth

While container volumes have been on the rise, the Port of Los Angeles has also seen significant growth in its cruise business, which has doubled over the past decade. The port anticipates another record year in 2025, with over 1.5 million passengers expected to pass through its terminals.

“Our goal isn’t fewer emissions, it’s zero emissions. We are setting a new standard for ports worldwide, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental stewardship can coexist,” stated a port representative.
